Karma and the Law of Attraction
79What is Karma?
Most people have heard of karma, they know about good karma and bad karma, and also about the idea of “cause and effect”. Karma is often paraphrased with expressions such as “what goes around comes around”, or “you reap what you sow”. Many people however confuse karma with justice. They do expect to reap what they sow, and then get annoyed or frustrated when they see good acts going apparently unrewarded or bad acts going unpunished. This article will attempt to dispel some of the misconceptions around karma, and to ease the minds of those of you who are frustrated at the length of time it takes for “payback” to kick-in.
Karma - a definition
The word Karma is a Sanskrit term. One definition of Karma (from Hinduism & Buddhism) is “the total effect of a person's actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person's existence, regarded as determining the person's destiny.”
A shorter definition of Karma is “the consequences of acts done in this life and past lives.” According to Buddhism, when we attain enlightenment we escape from the wheel of Karma and reincarnation, and of course the Buddha himself did achieve this.
But it is not as simple and straightforward as that. Did you know that our personal karma can also be wrapped up in family and group Karma, national and even planetary karma? This makes things complicated, as it is not only a person’s individual thoughts and actions which determine his good or bad karma. For example, you may also benefit or suffer as a result of the karma created by your ancestors, which is playing itself out in your life right now.
Also, let’s be clear, karma is not the same as judgment. There is no old man sitting and watching us, twiddling his white beard and brandishing a big stick, who dishes out punishment for “bad actions” whilst rewarding “good actions”. It is more a question of the Universe keeping itself in balance. The Universe is always in balance.
Secondly, it is important to understand that Karma has nothing to do with helping or hurting people; about being good or bad. The Universe does not understand “good” and “bad”, these are human concepts. What the Universe operates on is energy and vibration.
Everything is Energy in Motion
Everything is energy, and everything is in vibration, in constant motion. Science has already verified this. As every school boy now knows, at the atomic level, everything is made up of particles, and all of these particles, and therefore everything, is in constant motion, constant vibration. Nothing is ever still, not even inanimate objects, like the desk in front of you, or the chair you are sitting on.
Everything is energy, even our thoughts, and everything is in vibration. Positive, passionate, joyful, inspired thoughts vibrate at high frequencies, where as thoughts of anger, fear, depression, or anxiety are low energy vibrations. So-called “good things” have a higher level of energy and vibration and “bad things” have a lower level of vibration. We can all feel this.
"Concerning matter, we have been all wrong.
What we have called matter is energy, whose vibration has been so
lowered as to be perceptible to the senses. There is no matter." - Albert Einstein
If you send out high vibration thoughts, words and actions, then that is what the Universe will send back to you. And if you send out low level energies, then that is what you will get back. When our vibration is at a high frequency, we attract “good things” and circumstances, or “good luck”, and of course the reverse is also true.
Esther Hicks, Abraham and the Law of Attraction
Thanks to “The Secret” and the legions of similar books from authors trying to jump on board the gravy train, we are all now familiar with the Law of Attraction, which basically says the same thing. We vibrate at a certain frequency or level, and attract to us “stuff” which vibrates at the same frequency. This is simply how the Universe works, and has always worked. “The Secret” is not new. Esther and Gerry Hicks and their teachings of Abraham have been teaching this for many years – but that is another story.
So Karma is the energy and vibrations that we or others in our groups or families (in this life or previous lives) have sent out into the Universe, now coming back to us.
Some people complain that “bad people” don’t get their just deserves quickly enough. They want to see them punished; to know that justice has been served. Well, Karma has nothing to do with justice, and there is also no way to know or control when or how the consequences of our actions will come back to us. Nor can we ever know the full effect that our words or actions will have on the lives of others, either now or in the future.
Some say that the more spiritually advanced we are (and therefore the higher our frequency of vibration) the quicker personal Karma comes back to us, arriving at the point where it can be almost instantaneous.
This also implies that those who are at a lower level of spiritual development and frequency of vibration will wait longer. This might explain why we rarely see the consequences of “bad actions” visited on the perpetrator. It does not mean, however, that the perpetrator got off “scott free”.
So, rest assured that you cannot negotiate with Universal Law, and that even if there is no apparent pay back, it will all happen in good time, and sometimes in ways that we could never imagine even if we tried.

While familiar with the law of attraction, I have never seen a clear explanation of karma. This makes so much more sense than the whole 'karma's a b*t*h' that I have been hearing so much of lately.
that examplains it perfectly.... thanks
Oh I'm in trouble. Oh well I'm used it. Thanks Sanny!
Interesting hub, I will re-read it so I've book marked it.
Someone once told me they believed that you picked the life you have now for yourself before you were born.. not sure at the time if that was meant to make me feel better or worse.
Hi, I thought I would just drop by and say thanks, and yes I totally agree with you, especially about atoms and things like chairs and inanimate objects vibrating on a molecular level. When I say this to people they just look at me blankly! as you probably gathered I am a quantum physics fanatic! I just love those little things! thanks Nell
WOW ! there I was considering writing a hub about karma and the bible verses(reap what you sow) plus a verse that says the evil doer thinks there's no punishment because it is not immediate !!!!!!!!That was brilliant. I'll leave mine for a while. hee hee.
Yes, indeed true, true. Please read my hub on The Law of Attraction and Affirmations and within this hub you'll find many helpful youtube clips of encouragement and one mainly that has the Universal Laws of Living that explains Karma even more. Take a look.
The Chinese has the concept of Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Man luck. Basically it means that factors beyond our control eg genes and circumstances have great impact on our desire to be great.
It's true that law of attraction works, just that it works according to its time.
I never heard of family karma.very interesting hub.Could you also explain more about Ester and Jerry hicks.
I have watched the secret and got interested in the Laws of Attraction. After stumbling on Jerry and Esther Hicks books by mistake looking for the secret.I have been reading them and enjoying them so much.I also went to one of their seminars last year.I loved what they had to say but they seemed to spend too much time on certain people they pick and I feel they could of covered so many more people.I also learned that they were the secret behind the secret.I think most people want just an easy 1,2,3, and I am rich.So the Movie the secret makes it just that way. When in real life there are so many other factors to consider.I would love to hear how your experience went.In one of their books they explained who ever wants to tell there own version what the secret is more power to them.I believed they were interviewed and the whole story is based on Jerry and Esthers findings. They are just happy the world knows.
Another saying connected to Karma -
"It is better to give than to recieve"
We earn positive Karma when we help those who can't help themselves, such as the physically and mentally Impared. The very young and the elderly.
On the other hand ,giving to those who are simply lazy and think they deserve what they have not earned is negative Karma because we are contributing to their indebtedness as a result of our giving without concern for the objective of our concern for others, namely instilling selflessness into the person we give help to.This is not to say they should give away everything they have.Common sense when giving is required.Ten percent is reasonable, even a farmer knows that he needs to give up a small portion of what he harvests in order to continue his harvests from year to year. Of,course, the biblical story of the Master who went on a trip far away and gave each of his servents a bag of gold according to their ability to invest it so,as to increase it's value to their master, gave each of his servents a bag of gold with which to invest, and upon returning praised the ones who earned him more and took away from those who were lazy and gave it to his most profitable servents. Thus the saying - "Those who have will always be given more ,and those who have not will lose even what they have." By hoarding what we have,we deprive ourselves of the chance to increase it's value, much like a farmer who plants seed in the ground in hopes that it will produce a bountiful harvest. He knows what is necessary for his harvest to be great, and does what he can to insure that it is.Anyone who has not the sense to know what should be done in this respect will not only lose what he already has but he may not be able to produce any harvest at all. Each will be able to harvest only according to their ability. So,a poor farmer produces a poor crop and a good farmer produces a good crop but a great farmer produces a great crop.
There is little risk if one knows the right conditions necessary for a bountiful harvest.Planting seed in poor soil produces a poor crop.Knowledge is required if you want to produce a good crop.
The purpose of "profit" is to increase the value of what we produce,so that eventually everyone will have more than enough with which to live without having to continue to struggle in order to survive. This Idea is repugnent to those who crave power over others, and have designed a system to prevent that from happening.
The greatest gift someone can give is the gift of knowledge.Wheather that knowledge is used properly is up to those who recieve it.
Attracting something into your pocession does not necessarily mean that you can keep it for any length of time.Like winning money in a lottery. Many have lost all they won in a very short time.Like the saying goes "A fool and his money are soon parted"
This is a very interesting, merging karma and the law of attraction to see the whole thing. Thoughful indeed!
Looks very interesting. I have bookmarked it for further reading. Thanks.
Garlic Angel :-)
I'm planning to write on it, too; but you've done it already. Thanks for enlightening me.
dear sannyasinman ,
Is your name derived from the hindi word pronounced 'sanyasee ' meaning one who has renounced the world ..
I would like to put my two bit in by saying that karma is the way the word is pronounced in english where as the word comes from the word 'karm ' which actually just means act or deed .
A very popular hindi saying to further explain my point .
"karm karo , phal ki iccha na karo "
literally translates to - do deeds ( good in this context ) do not wish for the fruit .
Great hub though . Haven't yet read Abrahams laws of attraction but being an Indian I feel like I have enough Indian history and science behind karma to keep me occupied for a few life times :)
Why continue to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Stop eating it's fruit, it will not set you free. Grace will set you free. God's undeserved, unmerited favor which can not be earned. To live in God's grace, really live in God's grace is to be free from "Karma"
Where did your quote from Albert Einstein come from? I can't find a place on the internet where it is verified to be said by him.

Hmmm...I didn't realise family karma came back to haunt one as well...as if individual karma isn't enough!
